One of the many reasons people love photography with SLR cameras is because you can really control the different aspects of each photo you take– from the shutter speed, to the lighting, to custom focus settings.

With a normal point-and-shoot, the automated features often determine the results. In the SLR cameras you have reign over all these features and more– but we’re going to make the focus settings our focal (ha ha) point of this post.

On your camera, set the P dial. While looking through the viewfinder, press the shutter button halfway down. Whatever item is highlighted will be the focus. If the focus is not the item you want then you must set a point manually. Every camera model is slightly different but in general they should all follow similar procedures.

Press the Menu button and go into the focus or auto-focus settings. You can adjust it so that the focus point leans to objects in the left, center, or right of the frame. Other cameras may require movement of a dial– which resides on the top of the camera. Some cameras allow for multiple points, and more options in between the 3 major zones.

This is a quick and easy way to shift the focus manually while taking photographs.

Sometimes the most complicated part of taking a good photo is the composition itself. It’s not just about subject and lighting, but the framing of the image and the elements within that frame. The way you frame your photos will make a difference.

Whether you’re photographing still life or action you must be selective. What’s the focal point? You don’t just take out your SLR camera for everything and anything– if you’re aiming your camera it means you found something interesting. Now it’s a matter of how to shoot it. It doesn’t need to be centered, but it should be the first thing the eye is drawn to. Make sure you choose an angle, focus, and background that won’t take away from it.

Also, keep it simple. Don’t choose something if everything around it is too busy. This isn’t Where’s Waldo, this is a subject worthy of photographing so don’t undermine it by trying to fit everything into one image– that several that express the theme. A close up of a flower has more of an effect than an overview of the full garden. Take a few separate photos of the different plants. This can also probably be applied to overdoing the settings on your SLR cameras. Keep it simple! Don’t change everything and gloss it over with ridiculous filters. It’s best to change settings just to get a clear photo and edit it later in a program.

Always ensure your photo has depth– there should be a distinct fore and background, with one or the other in focus. Let the image breathe– consider proportion, symmetry (or asymmetry), and color balance in the frame. These are some basics to follow.

The weather is warm and cool, the trees are turning green and sprouting. It’s the ideal weather for traveling: it’s not cold but not too hot. It is also a fantastic time of year to get out a Nikon compact digital camera and document the change of the season.

Blooming flowers and trees growing leaves are actually great subjects for photographs. They make interesting compositions and they’re fantastic practice for an average user because they’re stationary.

After all, who doesn’t love nature photography? It’s one of the everlasting genres that you see in the magazines, newspapers, and online media too. You can take photos of the outdoors very easily with a standard Nikon compact digital camera. They don’t need any special setting features in order to look nice and you can adjust the way the photographs look later in an editing program on your computer at home.

Having the compact camera makes it easy for you to travel around and really explore the outside for the best photographs. Consider the beginning of spring to be your opportunity to travel about with ease as a photographer looking to expand your nature/ landscape portfolio.

Digital SLR cameras are a photographer’s dream come true. They are so incredibly customizable you can really build an amazing portfolio of work. In order to master this technology you will need to experiment with the different features. In the last post we covered the ISO, tripods, and lenses. Now we are going to discuss file formats, perspective, and production/editing.

When it comes to file formats the most common form to share is JPEG. You will see just about all point-and-shoot cameras use this file. It’s easy to store and it’s flexible with editing programs. However if you’re going to use SLR cameras and take advantage of picture quality then you shoot try shooting in RAW. This format is professional grade and the absolute best for archiving because it keeps the images unaltered. The only downside is that because it retains all the digital information they are space hogs and a little complicated to work with.

Perspective is more a matter of learning framing your photos. Some images are going to be more interesting than others simply based on the way you compose it. Try shooting the same subject or scene from different angles, distances, and sides. Having a selection at the end of your shoot makes a difference– never limit yourself to a few shots, take as many as you can fit.

As for editing the photos you take with SLR cameras, you are going to want a decent photo editor. You can find basic ones online, but for the most versatility you will want to invest in something more like Photoshop. You get a certain amount of flexibility with the features on your actual camera but just about every professional photo you see in magazines or galleries went through production. You have better controls with white balance, contrast, saturation, selective color, and more when you use an actual program.

Hopefully you’ll try some of these things out and expand your photography. Try something new each day you decide to photograph something.

Let’s say you’re really into photography. So you go out and you buy the best SLR camera you could find. Now it’s a matter of getting the most out of this investment as possible. In the following paragraphs you will get a few easy tips to make your photography sessions all the more worthwhile, resulting in better final prints.

One thing to remember is the ISO settings. It is probably one of the more crucial elements to professional photography. Digital SLR cameras have a feature that allows for customization of the film speed. For photography this really means the roll of film’s sensitivity to light as determined by the sensors. Digitally this translates too, but it’s a matter now of adjusting the settings so that even in poorly lit environments you get better quality pictures. As the ISO number increases, the amount of time the lens is open decreases. That will reduce blurring from lack of a flash and a shaky hand.

Another good thing to have is a tripod. You’d be amazed how useful a portable tripod is when you’re on the go. They will give you steady shots and allow you to adjust settings without losing your intended composition for each frame. Foldable ones can fit snuggly in a backpack or camera gear case.

Another thing is to invest in lenses as you see fit. What’s the point to owning a good camera if you don’t own quality lenses for it? They greatly affect the final shot. It’s like giving yourself the cheap drug store prescription eyeglasses as opposed to the ones sold by eyeglass stores. You see much clearer and get a crisper visual if you put the money towards a nice set. Look into the different types to add special effects to your images.

These are only a few of the many easy tips for making your photos better. Enjoy.

Photography is more than just having a good eye and a steady hand. It is also knowing when to take advantage of the technology you hold in your hand and how to best use natural settings. Sometimes you see photographers spending a good 10-15 minutes planning, looking around, and testing out the camera before they actually take the shots they want. This is because they’re getting their scope of the area.

With your Nikon digital SLR camera you should be doing the same. Your camera has auto settings and manual ones. You need to know when it’s best to adjust the effects and when it’s best to let nature dictate the composition. Use natural lighting when you can. If you want to change the tonal quality, you can set your Nikon SLR white balance to make things warmer or cooler.

There are other simple tricks you can achieve by using natural resources. For one, you can use the landscape’s horizon as a way to steady your shot and make it level. Use natural shade and light for effects such as portraits to avoid washout from flash.

Also, think about your composition. Some things are more dramatic up close and personal, other things look better at a distance. Use your better judgment when picking a subject to photograph. And most of all, have fun!

Are you going to Cancun or just relaxing at home? Regardless of whether your packing bags or prepping for a “stay-cation,” you are going to be spending a lot of free time with friends. You’ll want to preserve these memories for a long time, too (and tease your friends when you get those amazingly unflattering or incriminating photographs).

If you plan on going out a lot or traveling then it doesn’t hurt to invest in a Nikon compact digital camera. These things are light to carry. With the proper memory card you can store hundreds of photos and document all the fun times you share with your closest buddies.

If you want something a little more professional then look for Nikon digital SLR cameras and get high quality images with every click. These are great when you’re going to exotic locations or the beach and you want to really capture every essence of being there, out by the water, on the warm sand. and soaking in the rays of sunlight.

How many times in your life do you get to spend such quality time and in such beautiful weather with no obligations and not a care in the world? This is something you are going to want to remember for the rest of your life, no qualms about it.

Capturing memories is the thing most people value the most about photography. Some folks think this is silly and simply “living in the moment” should be enough for having a wealth of memories. However the power of perspective can very quickly change events and having a photographic record can help take some of your personal spin off of an event. When disagreements about who was where and what happened occur you can simply mine an album on your Facebook profile loaded with evidence to properly recount an event or series of events.

The convenience and excellent pricing of Nikon compact digital cameras has been a big boon for preserving memories. These days snapping huge collections of photos has become so inexpensive that everyone does it. As a result there is something of a living record of every moment we experience. Using a Nikon compact digital camera to show where you have been and who you were with is now the norm. Gone are the days where you have to rack your brain to recount an evening to friends. These days you can simply let the photographs do the talking for you. Being able to recount moments in time more clearly is a great asset!
